In 2019 record-breaking British climber Tom Ballard disappeared on one of the Himalayas’ most deadly mountains, Nanga Parbat. 25 years earlier and just 100 miles away, his mother Alison Hargreaves, one of the greatest ever female mountaineers, perished on K2.
The Last Mountain follows Tom’s sister, Kate, on a trip to Nanga Parbat to say goodbye to her brother. Combining intimate family archive shot over 25 years with Tom’s own extraordinary footage taken up until just days before his death, hdhub4u the documentary tells the incredible and emotional story of a family who lived – and were prepared to die for – the love of scaling the icy heights of the world’s highest peaks
The making of the film
It’s our hope that this film is the first of a film series on the people who risked and died at the highest heights to survive the rugged life of a mountain climber. In 2019, we intend to make two more documentaries, one covering a British climber’s mission to scale Everest, and another following the heroic attempt of the Japanese team to scale the north face of the Eiger in the Bernese Alps.
Over the last year, we have built the foundations of the story, interviewing mountaineering legends, historians, editors and film makers to ensure we got the facts right and that we drew as close as possible to a man’s experience.
The footage we have so far is extraordinary.
The journey to Nanga Parbat

The Last Mountain started life as a fiction short story for writers’ group, Open Magazine in 2011. It was the combination of three different stories written at around the same time, running over ten pages. These led to author Alex Callinicos discovering that the three original stories and this author’s own story were effectively one. Alex liked the idea of “the son finding the father” and asked senior editor Guy Portelli to write it up. The film is the fruit of the relationship between Callinicos and Portelli.

Preparations for the climb
The Last Mountain follows former soldier Jim Wilson and climber Alex Lowe on their ascent of K2, a 19,650ft peak. Lowe’s girlfriend Ester Ledecka – who had been climbing with the pair on K2 in 2012 but had never climbed with either – tragically died during the climb. Lowe left the mountain but Wilson, who had just been discharged from the army, was forced to abandon his attempt due to mental illness.
Our expedition to Everest
In May last year the Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined a team of 16 Sherpas and their porters on an expedition to Mount Everest. They undertook the eight-day trek in memory of Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana. Accompanied by Sherpas from the region’s Tengboche Sherpa Lodge, the Duke and Duchess also offered a donation to a local charity.
The climb to the summit
This documentary is also a spectacular epic that tells the real-life stories of the British climbers of today. From Hollywood legend ‘white hiker’ Karen Matthews, the first female to summit K2, to London-based trekker Ben Mason, one of Britain’s most experienced mountain climbers, the team from Ground Control and the Wild.com expedition team are at the forefront of the world of alpinism. The Mountain has been written and produced by Pete Wild, award winning filmmaker and member of the British Mountaineering Council.
The death of Tom Ballard
The film is directed by Will Dower, and we joined Dower and Sinead Hewitt, Tom’s mother, on set in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh.
We chatted with the director about the film and his role in bringing it to life…
Why is The Last Mountain special to you?
It’s hard to put it into words, you know. It’s been a long journey for me and it’s one that I’ve been obsessed with for a very long time. A big part of it was to talk to Alison about her time up there in the Himalayas with Tom and to take that journey to Dharamsala to where he died. It was a long and challenging process and it really took quite a lot out of me, actually, to get there.
The aftermath of his death
The Last Mountain, directed by the filmmaker’s husband, Mark Lee Smith, follows the various women and men who remain a part of Tom’s extraordinary life and the impact his death has had on them.
In February 2015, after five years of searching, Alison finally found her brother’s body. “This is the story about grief, recovery and finding something new,” she told The Telegraph in a recent interview. “Some people say it’s like two people who are only one person because he wasn’t the only one who was lost on that mountain.
A 25-year journey to tell the story
The Last Mountain has been 25 years in the making and comes from award-winning, artist-turned-filmmaker Kate Mulhall.
Kate first heard of the story when Tom’s father, Derk, presented her with a joint family archive including some of the family’s favorite childhood photos. She decided that what she had was enough to make a film.
After the family contributed memories, she was able to delve into their personal archive and interview everyone in the family about their Everest climbing adventures.
The film also features dramatic reconstructions of the events leading up to the accident and the final hours of the expedition.

A 25-Year Odyssey
The Last Mountain starts in 1985, when Tom’s mum Alison begins writing letters to her son explaining the dangers of the very mountain he would attempt to conquer in the year 2000.
Throughout the next two decades Tom faithfully returns to the mountain from time to time, first to train with his British Army mountaineering club and then, towards the end of his life, to confront his demons.
More skilful and determined than ever to complete his own quest, he discovers that his mother was never actually killed on K2 but has now reached the top.
The documentary follows him on his treks to the place where she lived with his sister as one last act of love and acceptance.
The Climbing History of Nanga Parbat
Nanga Parbat’s story is just one of many from the history of climbing the world’s most dangerous mountains. In 1973, a then-25 year old Colin Haley made the first summit of the peak he would later call ‘The Most Dangerous Mountain in the World’, although at the time it was described as ‘the Most Desirable’ by the New York Times. Haley, then the fifth person to climb all 14 of the world’s 8,000 metre summits, made the first ascent from a new route, ‘Super-4’.
In the months leading up to his climb of Nanga Parbat, Haley – who took the newly named ‘world’s most dangerous mountain’ by storm with his first ascent – was discussing the challenge with senior Sherpas of the region.

In 1979 famed mountaineer Henry Kolar left his fiancée Kari after catching her cheating. He embarked on an epic solo climb of Mount Everest, dragging his infant son Ralf along the way. When he made it back to the United States he fell in love with Kari and began a new life in San Diego. Seven years later he left to climb the 15th highest peak on the planet, Nanga Parbat. Unfortunately he and his wife, Nora, perished during their attempt.
The Search for Tom Ballard and Alison Hargreaves
The film was created with the support of The Summit Foundation and by grants from the Tusk Trust, the CFC Foundation, Prince Albert II of Monaco’s International Centre for Peace through Tourism and the New Zealand Government.
Included in the film is a stunning part about what happened to Tom on K2. Although he survived the icy fall, he died just days later from severe frostbite and hypothermia. I think the scale of Tom’s death on K2 was underrated at the time. He was among the most experienced climbers on the mountain, and was undoubtedly in superb physical condition at the time. Alison’s memoir, The Last Mountain, talks of the moment she found her son in the ravine and the shock of seeing him as he died, near the camp he had reached to attempt a rescue.
