Grants story
Grants is a young deaf man who loves music and the law enforcement service dogs. He dreams of being a K-9 Search and Rescue dog with the California Highway Patrol and helping save lives on the dangerous highways of Southern California. Dan has been stuck at his patrol post for years, stuck in the rut of doing paperwork, while his mentor Sam (T.J. Miller) lives out his dream of being a K-9 Search and Rescue dog.
Three years earlier, Sam and his K-9 partner Bug were badly injured on the job and now both dogs are ready to retire, but Sam refuses to let Bug go. However, Bug has grown up with Dan and always wanted to be part of a family.
When Bug and Dan first met, Dan was less than thrilled, but he changed his mind when he saw how the dog melted into his owner.
Ruby’s story
Ruby has been at the Pine Ridge animal shelter in Rapid City, South Dakota, for several months. The 7-year-old Shar Pei/Lab mix was picked up as a stray and turned in because her owners could no longer care for her.
“This sweet girl is deaf, so it’s tough for her to hear us calling her, but she knows we’re here and knows to come to us when we make a noise.
Ruby came to the shelter as a stray. She was running around in the woods, without anyone to care for her. When she wandered into a truck yard, the workers of the facility found her and called our shelter.
Ruby is an extremely loving, affectionate dog. She is wonderful with our staff, volunteers and is very affectionate with our cats! She also loves kids and is great with younger children.
Dan’s backstory
The fact that he was homeless at a young age after the death of his parents was explored in season 1. During his struggle, he became a certified search and rescue dog for the San Jose City Police Department’s K-9 unit. After retiring, he worked at the center which bred and trained the dogs.
Ruby’s backstory
Ruby was adopted from a group called The Bully Breed Rescue after his first dog was taken away. While trying to find new dogs to give to a new owner, Ruby was brought in, only to be put to sleep after a traumatic seizure. Dan was so devastated that he turned to alcohol for comfort. After learning about his life story, a stranger took pity on him and decided to let him adopt Ruby, whose three sisters were in another shelter.

How their relationship began
A blind golden retriever named Ruby in Minnesota was recently euthanized by her owner when she ran away, leaving behind a loving owner, Dan. He and his friend got a new dog named Bo, who is Ruby’s litter-mate, and together they raise up their canine friend in hopes of one day reuniting him with his partner.
As Dan and Ruby get to know each other, Dan discovers that Ruby has an undiagnosed medical condition that prevents her from jumping and climbing. She also can’t walk properly. Unable to secure a K-9 Search & Rescue team, Dan tries a new method to find Ruby, by placing an ad in the local paper.
Meanwhile, Ruby also begins a campaign to get Dan’s attention, and is excited when she finally sees him. Bo, who takes comfort in the company of his canine sister, begins to heal.

Ruby has a blind spot. Not only does she not understand how to be social and get along with other dogs, but she is also not familiar with any of the exciting distractions and activities that Dan craves in his life. After hearing this, Dan becomes determined to improve Ruby’s basic skills. Ruby takes Dan under her wing as he teaches her how to sniff out buried buried objects. Her guiding paw is instrumental in helping Dan be a better K-9. Ruby also helps Dan realize that he is not the only one who is struggling with some of the people and circumstances around him.
