Drexel Health Insurance Plan

Drexel University offers a number of excellent healthcare plans for its students. All full time students are required to show proof of health insurance by the end of every academic year, by signing up or waive any existing coverage. The university does not discriminate against any individual or family making this fact very easy to follow. Any student who wishes to join the Drexel Health Insurance Plan can apply online by completing an application. Students may also choose to speak with a representative in person or by phone to discuss the details of their plan. Once signed up, Drexel Health Insurance takes effect immediately and will provide students with a variety of benefits and services that are designed to help students maintain a healthy lifestyle through adequate healthcare coverage.

One of the most popular Drexel Health Insurance plans is the Preferred Provider Network Plan. This plan provides coverage for one physician visit and reimbursing 30% of the physician’s office visits. If the student requires frequent hospital stays then this plan provides a good option. Students who are still in high school at the time of enrollment must meet the following requirements: reside in the dorms at Drexel or one of the approved Drexel schools, have an Individual Developmental Plan in place, and be on the wait list. Once all requirements have been met then the preferred provider network will be opened to the student. Students who wish to join the Preferred Provider Network but are still in high school must meet the following requirements: reside on campus or in the dorms at Drexel, have proof of parent consent, and have a HSA with an annual deductible.

There are several other forms of student health insurance plans available to students as well. Students may also choose to enroll in a Student Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) or Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). A student who wishes to purchase both a HMO and a PPO may qualify for reduced costs through their parents’ insurance plan. In order to receive reduced rates on either a HMO or a PPO, participants must maintain low-income status. After the health plan has been established, coverage is usually subject to change according to each policyholder’s renewal date.

Students who do not qualify for one of these two options may want to consider purchasing a Drexel health insurance plan that does not require a waiver. Students who are on academic probation or students who have been out of post-secondary education for six months or less are considered defaulted. A defaulted student health insurance plan will require a waiver to be implemented. A student who has five or more unexcused absences during the year will also be considered a default. Absence of a waiver will require a defaulted student to pay for premiums on their own.

A Drexel plan provides coverage only during the academic year. Coverage stops once the student finishes his or her college coursework. Students who wish to continue their dental plan throughout their entire academic career should choose a PPO. A PPO allows flexibility by allowing the plan holder to switch from the HMO to the PPO at any time. During the summer vacation period, a PPO can be used as a medical deferment tool. Military personnel and their families are eligible for military insurance. Certain benefits are available to eligible military personnel and their spouses. Drexel offers three types of military insurance that are acceptable coverage for military personnel: Basic and Preferred Plus Plans. Both types of plans offer low premiums with a variety of options to choose from. Preferred Plus Plans are available for active duty, retired or inactive military members.
